SMSC

Mrs C Shiels (SMSC Lead)

Eslington Primary School is a special school for pupils from the ages of 5 to 11 years and caters for Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.  With this in mind, Eslington Primary School recognises that the spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) elements of a pupil’s education are crucial to their development as an individual, as it allows them to take their rightful place in their community as a local, national and global citizen.

Overall, children will understand the importance of each area of SMSC and how they link intrinsically across the whole school, further developing into wider society.

The purpose of SMSC at Eslington Primary is to:

Spiritual development – belief’s, religion or otherwise will inform perspective on children’s lives and interests, as well as developing respect for other’s beliefs and values.

Moral development – understanding attitude and behaviour to what is right and wrong

Social development – acquire the skills and competencies needed to play a full part in society

Cultural development – understand the beliefs, values and customs of their own and other social, ethnic and national groups.

The overall ambition across school is for:

  • SMSC learning to be intrinsic to the whole curriculum and ethos of the school life
  • Children to make links to SMSC throughout their learning journey
  • Children to leave Eslington Primary school with the SMSC toolkit to take their place as individuals in the wider global community.

For children to take the toolkit of skills and knowledge they have developed over their time at Eslington Primary and pursue further interests, such as:

  • Tackling environmental issues
  • Rights of children and adults
  • Passing on the toolkit by teaching the next generation how to be model citizens
  • Supporting others in developing respect, resilience and tolerance.
